How to Make Photo Frame at Home – Hobby Ideas: DIY

Basic Material I have used for Photo frame:

• Cardboard
• Asian Paint (Black color)
• Fabric color (Silver color)
• Fevicol
• Outliner (copper color)

Procedure for Photo frame:

• Cut 2 piece of cardboard in rectangle shape (Call it Cardboard A and B).
• Take `A’ piece of cardboard and cut 3 rectangle shapes inside it as shown below.
• Apply Black color on cardboard `A’ and immediately apply silver color.
• Draw freehand design with help of outliner, and let it dry for 24 hour.
• Stick photos or greeting card on it.
• After sticking photograph stick Cardboard `B’ behind Cardboard `A’.

Tips to Enhance Your Sand Painting

Though I am not an expert at sand painting yet I have learnt a few tips from my own experience. Let me share some practical tips to enhance your Sand Painting:

• If you are good enough in drawing you can draw some floral pattern or some freehand pattern so that you can get rid of sticking butter paper and carbon paper.
•  To give a 3D look to your sand painting try sticking thick black thread on outline of pattern.
• Instead of background you can also stick sand on pattern and then color it.
•  If you want to experiment with sand on your whole painting then apply somewhere single layer of sand and somewhere two or three layer of sand depending on your pattern.
• Don’t apply fevicol (adhesive) all over at once, work in small-small area, that is apply fevicol in small area then sand, press it with light hand… again repeat the same procedure.
• After sticking sand in 4-5 small areas leave it for some times say 1 hour then slowly reverse        your painting and tap with your fingertip from behind so that extra sand will fall down.
• If your pattern consists of a God wearing jewelry you can highlight it with M-seal, make small balls of M-seal, stick it immediately then color it with golden color.

A Simple Sand Painting Design Pattern for Beginners

Here I have illustrated a very simple Sand Painting Pattern for beginners.

  



• It is done on a wooden board.
• First I have applied a primer on board.
• I have drawn a very simple floral pattern on board with help of pencil and then outline it with help of outliner.
• Color it using pearl based fabric color.
• For background, I have applied fevicol and the sand (For detailed procedure you can read my previous article on Sand Painting).
• I have tried to give beach look by coloring half of the painting blue and fixing some stone on it. Instead of stone I have used M-seal balls and colored it black and gray. You can also add some shell.

Sand Painting Tutorial for Beginners

Basic Materials Required for Sand Painting

• Wooden board
• Sand
• Fevicol (any adhesive which can stick sand on board)
• Outliner or thick black thread
• Color
• Pattern traced on butter paper

Procedure for Sand Painting

• Clean your wooden board.
• Apply Primer and let it dry for 24 hours.
• Keep the carbon paper and then pattern on board; stick the edges of board, carbon paper and butter paper properly so while outlining the pattern the design traced is proper.
• Try outlining the design at one starch.
• The design is ready on your board, now you can outline it with outliner or stick black thick thread on outline of pattern.
• Fill the required oil/acrylic/fabric color in pattern.
• Once the color is dried out apply the Fevicol with help of brush in background and sprinkle sand on adhesive before it dry.
• As soon as you sprinkle sand on Fevicol remember to press it lightly with your thumb.
• Reverse the painting and tap it with finger so that extra sand falls down.
• Let it dry and frame it.

Glass Painting Without Background Color

Glass painting can be considered as an advantage if you don’t want to give any background color to your painting. I have experimented with one of my painting in similar ways, and believe me it has been appreciated by everyone. It looks different & it looks beautiful. Why? Cause you it takes the background from its environment i.e. with the same painting you’ve a different look every time you change the color of the wall (where you’ve displayed it) or you change the position in a way you wish to reflect a different background color.

Here I would like to share my trial with you:

I have done the above painting on a glass with a length & breath dimension of 30”*16” on a 3mm thick glass sheet.

Instead of using glass outliner I have used CD/OHP Marker to give fine outlining.

For coloring I have used Fabric color.

No background color is used keeping in mind that whatever will be the color of the wall, will work as the background color of the painting. It has added more reality to the painting.

Before framing I have compressed the painting with 30”*16” 2mm glass sheet i.e. at the back of the painting there’s a 2mm thick glass sheet. So the color will not fade in the future.

Music in Air Pattern: Glass Painting

While browsing through internet, I stumbled upon an interesting pattern. I could not resist my temptation to try my painting skills over it. Theme of the painting is Music in Air: The Queen enjoying the musical rhythmic pattern emanating from the flute…the rhythm synchronizing with air to create Music in Air. 

Here’s the pattern:

• Very bright shades has been used.
• Camlin Glass Color is used here; Instead of Glass color you can use Oil or Fabric color.
• Here, I have used Glass outliner not marker. Due to Glass outliner the Glass color (Water based) does not spread from one section to other.
• While working with glass color, remember to rupture the bubbles immediately otherwise your painting will be blemished. Read 10+ Tips to Enhance Glass Painting Art for details.

Steps to Make Glass Outliner at Home

How to make Glass outliner at home

Usually outliners are easily available in any stationery shop, but it is also simple to make it at home. You can use outliner on glass, fabric, pots and wood board. If you are too artistic then try using different shades liner present in your wardrobe by writing something interesting, create your nameplate, make design on mirror etc. Making your own outliner at home gives you a vast range of colors you may have wished for.

Material required for Glass Outliner

• Plastic Sheet (to make cone)
• Ceramic Powder (easily available in hardware shop)
• Fevicol (Adhesive to mix with ceramic)
• Color (any shade as per requirement)
• Small plastic container and spoon (for mixing)
• Cello tape and scissor.

Steps for making Glass Outliner

• Make a cone (required size) out of plastic sheet and fix it with cello tape.
• Mix ceramic powder, fevicol and fabric color in a plastic container.
• Make thick and free flowing paste (No lumps should be left).
• Pour the paste in the cone and fix it with lot of cello tape to avoid any leakage.
• Cut the tip of cone (as per requirement) with scissor.
• And here is your outliner… ready to outline your next pattern.
